Archaeology of New Jersey, Dorothy Cross. Set of Volumes 1 & 2. Published in 1941 & 1956.

Volume 1 published in 1941. Large, iv to. xii, 271 pages, maps and plans, 73 plates. Folding map and plan in pocket. Cloth cover. This volume is a detailed report on the excavations of 39 Indian sites in New Jersey, and one of the major works on the Indian in New Jersey.

Volume 2 published in 1956. Large, iv to. xii, 215 pages, Illustrated, diagrams, tables, 46 plates. Cloth cover. This volume is devoted exclusively to the Indian artifacts uncovered at the Abbott Farm just south of Trenton, NJ.

Both volumes are in very good condition and normally not found together.

Prehistoric Sandal -- Stermer COA

 

 

SANDAL - 9" long x 4" wide and from southwest CO.

Made of Yucca fiber and found in a dry cave. This is a very rare artifact from the Late Prehistoric Period dating in the 1400 AD - 1600 AD range.

Stermer's COA describes it as "a medium-size sandal fragment that has been fashioned from yucca fibers and was attached with cordage when worn. This example is nearly intact, missing only a small portion in the heel area. This is a rarely found artifact type due to its perishable nature".

A very well preserved and interesting find.

Shell Plummet/Pendant

 

SHELL PLUMMET/PENDANT - 2 3/8" long x 7/8" wide and from Wilmington, OH.

Made of marine shell that is heavy and thick. Found very far inland for the material. We bought this as a Plummet but it may of been worn as a Pendant. It has polish, fairly deep suspension groove and is very well made and shaped.

Found by Dr. Welch and Ex-Donald McBeth collection.

It is pictured in Who's Who #1 (1960), page 65. A copy of this page that shows some of Mr. McBeth's incredible collection provided to buyer.

Bone Comb

COMB - 2 7/8" x 1 3/8" x 1/8" thick and from the Great Gully Site, Seneca County, NY.
 
Raised "Man In Arbor" effigy in center of Comb on one side (see 3rd picture). 
 
Thin as a cracker and in great condition. The shorter teeth are not broken. It is made that way. Most combs found have very few teeth of varying lengths.
 
This very rare artifact is Iroquois in origin and dates to about 1680.

Shell Necklace plus Pottery, Bone & Shell Artifacts

 

SHELL NECKLACE plus POTTERY, BONE & SHELL ARTIFACTS - Found together in Yolo County, CA.

Shell necklace with 100 round shell beads. Most are a little less than 1/2" across and 1/4" thick. The beads are in great shape. The orange dirt has not been cleaned off.

Also included in the frame are:  small worked shell triangle, several drilled shell beads and whole shell pendants, drilled pottery pendants and a pottery disk, polished bone tube, smaller bone tube, small bead with incised lines around the edge. (see close-up pictures to the left.)

8" x 12" Riker frame included.

Shell Pendant

SHELL PENDANT- 1 13/16" long x 1" wide and from Humboldt County, CA.

Made from a piece of drilled Abalone shell. Large and colorful with fine edge serrations.

It was recovered from the Big Lagoon site north of Eureka, CA and is from the Wiyot Tribe.

It dates between 800-1000 years old.

Wampum

WAMPUM - 2 strands from the Murray Site, Washington Boro, Lancaster County, Pa.
 
They are strung as two 12" necklaces. One has 65 beads and the other has 60. The largest bead is about 1/4" and most are a little less.
 
Made from the Quahog shell, the beads vary from purple to white and date to about 1640.
 
Authentic wampum is hard to find. You can see the age by the degradation in the shell and coloring.

Pipe Bag

 

PIPE BAG - about 18 1/2" long x 3" wide and from South Dakota.

It is a tan and beaded Cree-type bag with a split tab opening.

It has 3 black/gold/white beaded diamonds on each side and a fringed bottom. It is in pretty good shape. We do not know the age.

An assortment of small HOHOKAM artifacts of SHELL, BONE, STONE and POTTERY mainly from Arizona.

Pics 1-2: 2 small drilled stone pendants, 1 notched stone with 2 incised lines, and 1 pottery disk. All are small and were possibly for a child.

Pics 3-4: 2-hole shell pendant, 1 square shell and 2 smaller shell pendants.

Pics 5-6: - 3 small bone tubes.

All of these artifacts were collected legally.

This is the rare and hard to find Volume Two. Devoted exclusively to the Indian artifacts uncovered at the Abbott Farm just south of Trenton, NJ.

1 of 150 numbered deluxe copies. This is copy number 127 and in very good condition.  Large, iv to. xii, 215 pages, Illustrated, diagrams, tables, 46 plates. Half Morocco leather (spine lightly scuffed and spine lettering oxidized which is normal).

2 Trade Bead Necklaces & 2 Bracelets

 

2 TRADE BEAD NECKLACES (approx. 27" each) & 2 BRACELETS (approx. 7" and 9").

Both necklaces will fit over your head. 2 Bracelets will fit over your hand. One is for a larger hand and the other a smaller hand.

The trade beads are from Lee County, FL and were recovered from the Harney Massacre site at "Fort Denard". This took place on July 28, 1839 and is located on the Caloosahatchee River east of Fort Meyers, FL. The beads were recovered from this site several years ago. Historical information provided.
